Abstract:

Health care is experimenting important changes in order that patients can actively participate in the management of his/her own health. Several e-health technologies that facilitate this purpose have emerged, and Personal Health Record (PHR) systems are one of them. PHRs collect information from hospitals, health care centers, institutions and also from the patient. The data they offer is helpful, but if they want to be really useful, they should incorporate tools to allow patients to better understand and act on the information. For this reason, this paper presents two approaches that can help to achieve this understanding. Firstly, an ontological intelligent searcher is presented. It retrieves high quality health information from heterogeneous data sources, and integrates it to provide useful knowledge to patients. Secondly, a set of inference methods are explained. Taking advantage of the UMLS semantic relationships, they are able to infer useful information that makes easy the navigability of software tools by means of recommendation of information to register
